Environmental Chambers and the Future of Thermoelectrics
A handful of innovative companies have figured out how to harvest the energy generated by small changes in ambient temperature. This has implications for everything from wearables to large scale, reliable smart grids.
A recent CNET.com article titled, Here comes the thermoelectric future: We tried out the next generation of self-powered sensors, describes the ways Matrix Industries is leveraging breakthroughs in thermoelectric science to build off the success of their battery-less smart watches. Matrix is now even working on larger systems including small scale power stations which can be used to power, “Bluetooth beacons, environmental sensors for weather or seismic vibration, or even smoke detectors or motion-controlled cameras...the PowerStation can work outdoors from -10 to 50 degrees Celsius (14 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit) and up to 85 percent humidity in various temperature conditions and generate from 1 to 5 volts.”
Meanwhile, researchers at UMASS Amherst are developing fabrics that are capable of generating power directly from the changes in human body temperature. This new, “wearable thermoelectric generator is also sourced from non-toxic and non-allergenic substances, making it a viable candidate for wearable technology.”
Whether it be watches, beacons, sensors or clothing, it seems that the field of thermoelectric science is evolving quickly and may soon be a big part of all of our lives. As more and more thermoelectric products are developed and brought to market companies will need to put an emphasis on quality control and reliability testing - that’s where we can help!
Associated Environmental Systems offers a variety of temperature/humidity chambers that could be used to test thermoelectric systems and ensure reliability. We offer bench-top, reach-in and walk-in style temperature and humidity chambers with precise environmental control. For example, our BHD Series Bench-top style chambers are available in sizes ranging from 2-8 cu.ft. and is capable of producing temperatures ranging from -65°C to +180°C (-85°F to +356°F) while maintaining humidity anywhere between 10% and 98% (± 2%) RH.
